Sculpture - The Harvest
handmade with stoneware + gold lustre
This sculpture is also a re-creation of the drawing by the same title I did in 2012. I attempted to portray this artwork in a sculpture about six years ago, with no success.
I thought I would attempt this challenge again and changed the general approach – bringing it more into a three-dimensional figure who is abundant with the fruits ready for harvest.
I enjoyed highlighting the fruits with gold lustre, which, alongside some mother-of-pearl lustre took this sculpture into a third kiln firing.
She feels rich, abundant, fertile and ripe. The Harvest represents this lushness of life and the peak of summer. From here the seeds for the next harvest are available. There is celebration, renewal, but perhaps also exhaustion from the efforts required to produce and get to this point of the harvest.
Winter will soon be around the corner. This is an opportunity for the producing trees, plants and land to rest, recoup and regenerate in preparation for the next growing season.
This is not unlike the chapters and phases we go through in our own life.
