Mental health and Artistic Expression

Q: Do you believe your artist expression is beneficial to your mental well-being? C.S.
A. Yes I do feel that expressing myself artistically helps with my mental state. Maybe this is part of the reason why I have never considered myself to have been depressed. In fact when I am feeling low or in a rut, this will often coincide with a strong 'pull' within me to create something.
I don't like the feeling of stagnation or things spiraling out of balance and into a heavy or low state. If I have been in this state for longer than 3 days, then I have to step up, self-motivate and push myself through - so it doesn't get worse.
I feel that expressing ourselves - whether it be through creative means, writing, verbalising or perhaps physical expression - helps move us out of a stagnant 'held back' space.
For me to express myself artistically is for me to turn my insides out - to reveal an inner part of myself, my thoughts, my vulnerability, my truth, who I am.

Much LOVE,

  • I completely agree with you on a personal level. I’m also very interested in art therapy or the therapeutic use of creativity in its many forms. It’s being used very successfully with many mental health sufferers, and it has the benefit of people finding new skills, talents and interests, as well as self knowledge. Without art life would be extremely dull, for me at least. πŸ™πŸ’œπŸ™
