Kaufmann is a misunderstood wizard. He has always been on the 'outer' of the wizardry circles - however he's never minded. Kaufmann has learned to do his own thing privately and independently. He took a few decades to build his confidence - when he was apprenticed to the great wizard Merlin. Now he is a fully practicing wizard, and he likes working his magic in the not-so-popular areas.
